Dear John,
It’s likely you’re as concerned as
I am by the rising level of gang violence and shootings on New
Zealand’s streets. It’s not just putting innocent bystanders at risk
but families who should feel safe inside their own homes. It’s simply
unacceptable.
It’s plain Police need more support
and under a National Government they’ll get it.
Today I announced four new measures
to back Police to tackle gangs and keep us all safe.
First, we’ll ban gang patches, which are designed to be
intimidating, and gangs know it. Patches are already banned in public
buildings like courts and hospitals. A National Government will extend
this ban to all shared public places.
In addition, National will give
Police practical tools that will empower them to:
- prevent gangs gathering and
intimidating people in public
- prohibit known gang offenders
associating or communicating with each other
- make it illegal for gang members
with serious convictions to access firearms.
Gangs are recruiting more quickly than Police. In the past five
years, gangs have added more than 2000 new members, while Police have
added an additional 1300 officers. That’s why National’s been calling
for a special gang taskforce. But instead of waiting for the
Government to act, we’re backing these four proposals and we will
support the Government if it chooses to adopt them.
You can read more about National’s
proposals here.
With your support at next year’s
General Election, we can enact these proposals and keep Kiwis safe in
their homes and communities.
