Did you watch the January 6th Committee hearing last night? I’ll admit, it was hard to re-live such a terrifying day.
I went back to my notes to see how I was feeling that day - here’s some of what I said to my team:
January 6th is a stain on our country’s history. My only hope is that this can serve as a watershed moment — a time for deep breaths and a recentering on what it means to be an American. We are the greatest democracy in the world. It’s time we start acting like it again.
A year and half later, we unfortunately have a far way to go from that sentiment. The extremists we saw storm our Capitol are now running for office. Marjorie Taylor Greene has a national megaphone to spew her hate. Donald Trump is preparing for another run.
Last night was a difficult, but important reminder that this upcoming election isn’t actually about politics. This upcoming election is about protecting our democracy.
I ran against a Trump extremist last year. I saw firsthand how close he got to representing my community and spreading conspiracy theories from our Capitol.
I refuse to let that happen this year. As one of 3 Democrats who will decide control of Congress (and whether Kevin McCarthy becomes Speaker and keeps covering up the truth), I need your help.
