Our allies step up to bring together Congress and Country

Progress comes when committed leaders of both sides work together even if they disagree. Compromise is a means to move forward together.

Last month, we once again had a sadly-too-familiar episode of senseless gun violence. For many Americans, it was accompanied by a sense of resignation – that once again, elected officials would do nothing.

But this time, our allies on Capitol Hill are taking action. Many of the same senators who crafted the bipartisan infrastructure agreement have been meeting to work out legislation on guns that can actually get 60 votes. And House Problem Solvers are working with them, understanding that it makes no sense for the House to pass a bill that won’t get anywhere in the upper chamber.

Only time will tell if now, things will truly be different. But our allies have already made more progress. The toughest problems and the most complex issues are those that most urgently call for two-party solutions – and in order to ensure lasting change, we’re doing the work to make them happen.

Please sign on to show our allies that you support their hard work on gun policy – and that you appreciate their bravery in working in unity across chambers and across party lines.

Let’s work together to fix this problem,

Five Facts on the Social Security Trust Fund
By No Labels

The Social Security trust fund is running out of money, but it has been decades since Congress passed legislation making reforms to the program. Tens of millions of Americans rely on Social Security for their survival, and it keeps many — not just retirees — above the poverty line. Congress needs to focus on this emerging crisis, and it will take work across the aisle to keep the program afloat.

What Trump Doesn’t Understand About Alaska
By Brendan Jones

As the only Republican senator fighting for her seat less than two years after voting to convict Donald Trump, Lisa Murkowski could be one of the crowning casualties in his war to rid the party of dissenters. Mr. Trump has insisted that voters here in Alaska won’t forgive Ms. Murkowski for her recent transgressions, and that Kelly Tshibaka, the Republican challenger whom he endorsed, “stands for Alaska values.”

Online Privacy Protection Bill Gets Bipartisan Push
By John D. McKinnon

A bipartisan group of House and Senate leaders announced broad agreement on establishing online privacy rights for Americans, in a big step forward for the long-delayed legislation. The legislation would put strong new limits on how technology companies can collect and use consumer data.

Bill Clinton and Tony Blair Have a Warning for Progressives
By John F. Harris

Bill Clinton and Tony Blair no longer have power, but they still have advice. They perceive plenty of people in need of it. The needy include progressives in the United Kingdom, where the Labour Party has not had power in a long while, and the United States, where the Democratic Party has power for now but looks likely to lose lots of it in midterm elections this fall. Together, they offered a fitness program of sorts for members of their own parties that they fear are getting badly out of shape.

New Jersey Centrists Seek to Legalize Their Dream: The Moderate Party
By Blake Hounshell

When Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, writing for the Supreme Court majority in a landmark 1997 case, rejected a minor party’s demand that it be allowed to nominate candidates who were already on the Democratic ticket, he argued that states have a strong interest in the benefits of “a stable two-party system.”
