Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Last week, we kicked off 202 for Peace, our citywide, summer-long gun violence awareness campaign. Yesterday, members of the community came together to march through our neighborhoods with a call to action ? put the guns down and pick the kids up [ [link removed] ].?Tomorrow, we will join March For Our Lives in demanding that Congress act now to protect Americans from the scourge of gun violence.

Gun violence is a solvable problem. But we cannot give up and we cannot lose hope.?

We must demand that the U.S. Senate listen to the majority of Americans who support common sense reforms. We know what Congress needs to do: require background checks for all gun purchases, enact red flag laws, and ban assault weapons. [ [link removed] ] At the same time, and as?we head into a summer of celebrations and events that represent and uplift our DC values [ [link removed] ], we must keep pushing here at home to send a strong message to our neighbors that we will not normalize nor tolerate gun violence in our streets.?

* Want to join next Thursday?s Peace Pop-Up? Learn more at?202forPeace.dc.gov [ [link removed] ].
* Know of an illegal firearm that should be removed from our community? Call MPD?s anonymous tip line at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
* Want to help someone impacted by the trauma of gun violence get connected to mental health care? Share the number for the District?s free, 24/7 Mental Health Hotline: 1-888-793-4357.
* Interested in becoming a mentor? Reach out to Serve DC [ [link removed] ] to learn more about opportunities to get involved in DC.

A safer future, a future with fewer guns on our streets and more peace for our children, is possible. Let's keep working together to get there.?

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
