Friends, It has happened again: another mass murder. Last week in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Before that it was Uvalde. The week before that it was Buffalo. When will this madness stop?
Right now, the debate on how to stem the tide of gun violence in this country is being fought from two sides: those who blame easy access to guns and those who send thoughts and prayers and say it is a mental health issue. But what is getting lost in the debate is that most everyone, on both sides of the political aisle, agrees on one thing: we need to vigorously enforce the federal laws we have on the books. The Senate has the opportunity to do just that by confirming Steve Dettlebach as Director of the federal agency whose mission it is to enforce federal firearms laws, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, known as ATF.
Like me, Steve is a former U. S. Attorney. He understands how important it is to enforce the law. He also understands that effective law enforcement comes from a strategy that is developed at the top. ATF has not had a Senate confirmed Director in 7 years. That is 7 years without a permanent director to guide ATF and develop a comprehensive crime fighting strategy.
America deserves better. America needs Steve Dettlebach. Help me get the message to all 100 U.S. Senators: if you want to do something about gun violence then confirm Steve Dettlebach immediately. You can help: first, call your Senator's office and ask them to confirm Steve Dettlebach. You can reach the Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senator. Then please share this message with one person you think can help make a difference too.
Thank you,
Doug Jones
