Aloha Fellow Republicans,

As we head into election season, I ask you to reflect on our past accomplishments, not only as Americans, but as people of Hawai'i and the great leaders of our past.

Kamehameha the Great was a master of many things and politically astute as skilled warrior and negotiator, inventor, seaman, ocean navigator, trader, cultivator of the land, and more.

Our Hawaiian monarchs understood that the unique islands of Hawaii is situated in Polynesia and the Oceania, and that the Pacific Ocean does not separate us from America, but instead, it serves as a vast highway that connects the Hawaiian islands to all the world.

His courage and handling of diplomatic affairs with world powers helped to preserve Hawai'i sovereignty, and put the island nation of Hawai'i on equal footing with other members of the federation of the United States.

Lot Kamehameha, or Kamehameha V, founded this holiday 150 years ago to celebrate King Kamehameha the Great. The constitution that Lot Kamehameha wrote and under which he ruled, resulted in Hawaii monarchs being elected, departing from hereditary rule.

When, on his deathbed, he refused to name a successor, the election of his predecessor and future monarchs was instituted.

On this day, as we move into the 2022 election season, may we remember the legacy of King Kamehameha and his predecessors.

May our candidates strive to be effective and wise, astute in the ways of the ways of Kamehameha the Great and our leaders before us, and may our people vigilantly protect our sovereign right to a free and fair election of our leaders.

Aloha to all of you this Kamehameha Day!

Lynn Finnegan
Chairman, Hawai'i Republican Party
