CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Making Florida Schools Safer

Governor DeSantis signed a new law this week to improve Florida school safety and youth mental health on several fronts.

HB 1421:

  • Authorizes the Commissioner of Education to enforce, rather than just oversee, school safety and security compliance;
  • Authorizes safe school officers to make arrests on charter school property;
  • Requires all safe school officers to complete crisis intervention and training to de-escalate incidents and improve responses to incidents at schools;
  • Requires law enforcement officers to be present and involved in active assailant emergency drills;
  • Requires school boards to adopt family reunification plans in the event of an evacuation; and
  • Requires school districts to annually certify that at least 80 percent of school personnel have received mandatory youth mental health awareness training.

In the Freedom First Budget, Governor DeSantis also approved a record $140 million for mental health and $210 million for school safety, including school hardening grants and youth mental health awareness and assistance training.

Governor DeSantis Saves Special Olympic Athletes from Vaccine Mandates

Governor DeSantis was joined by Special Olympic International athletes and their families, coaches and community members to announce there will be no COVID vaccine mandate and show support for all athletes competing in the 2022 USA Games. Everyone can compete.

“Florida will always be welcoming to all of our athletes with disabilities, regardless of COVID vaccination status,” Governor DeSantis said. “Special Olympics International should have never imposed a vaccine mandate on their athletes.”

For six months, Florida negotiated to support these athletes as much as we supported other communities in the state. Governor DeSantis will continue to support Floridians of all abilities and values their daily contributions to our communities

Florida Budgets $500 Million for Environmental Resiliency

Governor DeSantis highlighted more than $500 million for environmental resiliency in the Freedom First Budget. Building on the success of the prior three years’ investments, the Fiscal Year 2022-23 budget is dedicated to increasing the resilience of Florida’s communities.

This includes:

  • $270 million to fully fund all three years of the state’s first ever Statewide Flooding Resilience Plan;

  • $180 million for the state’s next plan which will be submitted later this year; and

  • $40 million for Resilient Florida Planning Grants to help communities develop and update comprehensive vulnerability assessments.

“Florida has become one of the most proactive states in the nation in addressing environmental resiliency of our communities,” Governor DeSantis said.

With the Freedom First Budget investment, since 2019 more than $1.1 billion has been directed to enhancing the resilience of natural and built infrastructure across Florida.

$10 million for World-Class Urban Search and Rescue Teams

Governor DeSantis announced $10 million from the Freedom First Budget for Florida’s eight Urban Search and Rescue teams to support operations and training to respond immediately in the event of a disaster.

“Our world-class Urban Search and Rescue Teams serve an important role in assisting state and local first responders during disasters,” Governor DeSantis said.

Since the Florida USAR system was created in 2001, these teams have provided invaluable support to Floridians during disasters, including the Champlain Towers South building collapse in Surfside, and playing a vital role in the immediate aftermath of hurricanes by providing lifesaving actions, clearing the way to devastated areas and aiding utility crews in restoring power and services.

Florida Takes Election Integrity Very Seriously

Governor DeSantis Signs Legislation to Support Florida’s Military Families

On Thursday, Governor Ron DeSantis signed six bills to support veterans, military members and their families in finding employment and educational opportunities in Florida. These pieces of legislation build on funding provided in the Freedom First Budget signed by Governor DeSantis last week to support Florida’s military members and their families.

The bills signed by the Governor provide education opportunities for veterans and children of active-duty military as well as expand access to employment opportunities by removing barriers to licensure and postsecondary education requirements.

Also, CareerSource Florida and state workforce agencies will dedicate $20 million in targeted workforce training supports for Florida’s veterans. This funding will focus on high demand industries including aviation, aerospace, and defense.

Senator Rubio highlights Pelosi/Demings ignoring the need for added security for Supreme Court Justices

As the Washington Post reported Wednesday: “a California man carrying at least one weapon near Brett M. Kavanaugh’s Maryland home has been taken into custody by police after telling officers he wanted to kill the Supreme Court justice...”

Senator Rubio was part of a unanimous Senate passage of the bipartisan Supreme Court Police Parity Act to protect family members of Supreme Court Justices. Val Demings' Democratic colleagues quickly introduced similar legislation in the House, but Demings is not a cosponsor of the bill and has not called for its prompt passing.

She seems to be missing in action again when it comes to Americans’ safety.

New York Post highlights AG Moody’s criticisms of NYC’s safe fentanyl ad

New York media have taken note of AG Moody’s insights on a controversial ad campaign:

The Sunshine State officials doubled down on their disdain for a controversial New York City Health Department ad campaign that tells junkies to not be ashamed of their drug habits — ripping Big Apple leaders for going “far off the rails” to deliver a deadly and reckless message.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody tweeted a copy of one of the woke NYC subway ads — which also says druggies should feel “empowered” when they use potentially lethal fentanyl safely, even though the substance was the leading cause of death among Americans ages 18 to 45 in 2020, according to one analysis.

“There is no ‘safe’ way to abuse fentanyl & these ads do not ‘empower’ users — they could get them killed,” the Republican AG wrote Tuesday. “I’m astounded how far off the rails NYC leaders have gone. DO NOT follow their reckless advice.”

CFO Patronis fought for Urban Search and Rescue team funding

Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis has made it a top priority this year to fight for and get $10 million for Florida’s Urban Search and Rescue teams. This historic level of funding to support our first responders & their life-saving missions will make them even better prepared for responding to disasters.

LG Nuñez fights leftist disinformation on Spanish-speaking radio

Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez was a featured speaker at a Miami event organized by a coalition of Cuban exile organizations to voice their opposition to the coming censorship of conservative stations such as Radio Mambí.

“Make no mistake, they are trying to convert Radio Mambi into Radio Soros,” she said. A Soros-funded entity is buying the conservative Spanish-speaking station and the Lieutenant Governor said she and Governor DeSantis want to hear the voices of opposition.
