This week the New Democrat Coalition (NDC) released a comprehensive action plan to fight inflation, lower the cost of living for Americans, and secure the long-term fiscal future of the nation. The New Dem plan examines the actions President Biden and Congressional Democrats have already taken to cut costs and outlines tangible steps federal policymakers can take to reduce prices on essential goods and services and provide relief to American families, workers, and businesses. New Dem Leadership members today also wrote to President Biden and House Leadership calling for the implementation of the Coalition’s plan to fight inflation. Specifically, New Dems called on the President to roll back costly and ineffective Trump-era tariffs, address the workforce shortage by updating immigration policies, and work to lower costs on everyday necessities, including housing, energy, and health care. New Dems called on Congressional leadership to quickly finalize a bipartisan innovation bill, negotiate a strong reconciliation bill focused on fighting inflation, and use every legislative week to advance an affordability agenda on the House floor.

Ben Ritz, Director of Progressive Policy Institute’s Center for Funding America’s Future, wrote about the New Dem Action Plan to Fight Inflation in Forbes, calling it “the best inflation-fighting blueprint to come out of Congress yet.”

NDC Vice Chair for Policy Scott Peters (CA-52)penned an op-ed in Fox about the New Dem Action Plan to Fight Inflation, emphasizing that New Dems will work closely with the Biden administration and members on both sides of the aisle and Capitol to tackle inflation and lower costs for Americans.
He wrote in part, “Tackling inflation is no small or simple feat. There is a lot of work ahead, but thanks to our members, we have a plan to get it done. As we move forward this year, the New Dem Action Plan to Fight Inflation will serve as an essential guide.” Read the full op-ed here.
This week, New Democrat Coalition Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released a statement following President Biden’s announcement of a two-year tariff exemption on solar panel imports and further steps to spur domestic clean energy manufacturing.
The statement reads in part, “Last month, New Dems pushed the Biden administration to act swiftly in the solar tariffs investigation in order to continue the transition to a clean energy economy, lower energy costs for families, and meet our clean energy goals. We’re grateful that President Biden took executive action today to waive tariffs on solar panel imports for 24 months and accelerate domestic manufacturing of clean energy technologies.”
This week, New Dems, led by led by Rural Reinvestment Task Force Co-Chairs Cheri Bustos (IL-17) and Cindy Axne (IA-03), wrote to Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo urging the Department to ensure rural America is a top priority when distributing funds and resources made available in the bipartisan innovation legislation. New Dems are continuing to push for swift action on a final bipartisan innovation bill that will strengthen supply chains, spur innovation, invest in research and strengthen American leadership.
Following heartbreaking mass shootings in Buffalo, NY and Ulvade, TX, New Democrat Coalition Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released a statement calling for urgent Congressional action on common sense gun violence prevention legislation. In 2022 alone, over 17,000 lives have been lost to gun violence. You can read the statement here.
This week, New Dems took action this week to advance critical commonsense gun violence prevention legislation, including bills from New Dem Reps. Anthony Brown (MD-04), Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), Salud Carbajal (CA-24), and Lucy McBath (GA-06).
Following the Biden administration's announcement of negotiations on a new Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released a statement applauding the decision to negotiate a new IPEF.
The statement reads in part, “Following the Trump administration’s misguided decision to withdraw from the region, New Dems applaud President Biden’s decision to champion a free and open Indo-Pacific region with strong democratic values. As forward-looking trade policy leaders in Congress, New Dems will work closely with the Biden administration on constructing and finalizing a deal that drives widely-shared economic growth, improves Americans’ lives, and reflects our values.”

House Passes McBath and Carbajal Bill to Issue ‘Red Flag’ Laws and Curb Gun Violence Rep. Lucy McBath’s (GA-07) H.R. 2377 Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, which includes provisions from Rep. Salud Carbajal’s (CA-24)H.R. 3480 Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, passed the House this week. This legislation establishes procedures for federal courts to issue extreme risk protection orders (also known as ‘red flag’ laws) and create incentives for more states to adopt extreme risk protection order laws
Casten and Crow Introduce Legislation to Transition the Department of Defense Away From Fossil Fuels Reps. Sean Casten (IL-6) and Jason Crow (CO-6) introduced H.R.7882 to protect U.S. troops abroad by strengthening the Department of Defense’s clean energy goals. The bill transitions the DoD away from its reliance on fossil fuels, which is a strategic and operational weakness for U.S. forces, and towards clean energy. It thus curbs climate change risk while addressing national security and troop safety risks.
Schneider and Torres Re-introduce Legislation to Require Multiple Firearm Sales Reporting
In the wake of recent tragic mass shootings, New Dem Leadership Member Brad Schneider (IL-10) and Rep. Norma Torres (CA-35) re-introduced H.R. 7904, the Multiple Firearm Sales Reporting Modernization Act of 2022 to require all federal firearms licensees to report the sale of two or more long guns. The bill will require licensees to report the sale of weapons including semi-automatic rifles like AR-15 and AK-47 within a 5-day period.
Axne Introduces Legislation to Protect Renters in Federally Backed Housing Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) introduced H.R. 7911the Safe at Home Act to protect renters living in federally subsidized housing. The bill would require increased oversight of rental properties backed by USDA and HUD to address the underinvestment and lack of inspection and oversight in federally backed housing and ensure landlords are maintaining safe, quality housing conditions.
Kilmer Introduces Legislation to Invest in Digital Skills and Literacy NDC Chair Emeritus Derek Kilmer (WA-06) introduced H.R. 7785, the Investing in Digital Skills Act to prioritize digital skills and digital literacy. The bill amends the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act so that it recognizes digital skills and literacy as critical adult education objectives necessary for employment and economic self-sufficiency.
The op-ed reads in part, “Gun violence affects every family in every community. No one is immune to this, and we are no different…That’s why we have championed extreme risk protection orders in Congress – because we know the devastating loss that gun violence can have on any family in America, and we know that red flag laws can help prevent it.” Read the full op-ed here.
