Hey John, I just had a meeting with our team and wanted to share some of the takeaways we had. This is going to be a long email but I need you to stay with me so we can be on the same page, OK?
We are still deeply disappointed by the recall of Chesa Boudin as the DA of San Francisco.
I myself am feeling very heavy about the whole thing.
This was one of our toughest moments so far because of how much time, effort, and work our team put in to elect Chesa in the first place.
I can’t even count the hours every single member of this team put in.
Chesa’s win was a signature moment for Real Justice. It was a sign that the tides were changing. That the people were electing a leader that they believed in. Electing REFORM they believed in.
Chesa exonerated one of the very first people EVER in the city. He was also the first to charge a police officer with murder, finally beginning to hold cops accountable in the city.
It had never been done before — and our opponents took notice.
Instead of waiting until Chesa was up for reelection, they struck when emotions were high, leading a campaign that preyed on the fears of the people.
They were able to manipulate the narrative to blame Chesa for crime and frame him as the reason people felt unsafe.
And they did that with close to $7 million worth of propaganda all over the city. — much of it from Republican mega donors.
It was a war of facts vs. fear and we tried to fight back with the truth.
But it was already too late. Chesa lost the vote. This was on all of us.
THESE are the kinds of dark money opponents we are talking about in emails and across social media. They are REAL and GIANT threats to our movement.
Their money machine is already planning their next attacks on more of our progressive DAs. Please, John, can we count on you to make a donation right now to begin the work now to protect our DAs nationwide?
In our meeting we discussed what we could have done as an organization to prevent the recall and one thing was said over and over again:
We need to start EARLY and be proactive, protecting our progressive DAs starting right now.
In New York, Republican lawmakers are already backing a constitutional amendment that would allow recall campaigns against elected DAs.
In Virginia, Republicans have already launched a recall effort against two of our elected DAs, and the Attorney General has been hard at work trying to take power away from our DAs to prosecute crimes himself.
So we need to get moving as soon as we can.
Before they have time to set up the kind of operation they created in San Francisco.
I refuse to accept that it had to go that way — and we can make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Love and appreciate you,
Shaun
