Last night, the first public hearings from the January 6th commission showcased just how perilously close we came to losing our democracy. In light of the information presented, the votes taken by Nicole Malliotakis and 138 other House Republicans to decertify the election weren’t just shameful -- they were an attack on America itself.
And here’s the truth: If Republicans take back the House, they will sweep the events of that day under the rug and there will be too great a chance of history repeating itself. We can’t let that happen.
Last night’s hearings showed that behind closed doors the Republican Party knew that the election wasn’t rigged, but they helped spread the Big Lie for months anyway. Those who continued to say that Donald Trump won either refused to accept reality or lied to the American public for their own political gain, neither of which should have a place in our Government. We must be better.
