Team,
We have seen unprecedented gun violence in our country, not just over the past week, but since the start of 2022.
None of us should grow accustomed to hearing a parent speak about planning their child’s funeral. None of us should grow accustomed to seeing kids fleeing a school with their hands in the air during an active shooter situation. We should not simply accept this as life in America.
The horrendous acts of mass gun violence have taken the lives of countless Americans – including children and teachers – and so many more. Yet, many of my Republican colleagues have consistently blocked any meaningful, common-sense gun safety legislation.
This week, I supported two pieces of crucial legislation: The Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act and The Protecting Our Kids Act. If passed, these laws would undoubtedly prevent more senseless acts of violence. Here is what you need to know:
Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act: Would allow family members and law enforcement to obtain an extreme risk protection order to temporarily remove access to firearms for those deemed a danger to themselves or others by a court.
Protecting Our Kids Act: Would raise the legal age to purchase semi-automatic rifles, crack down on gun trafficking, establish safety measures for residential storage of dangerous firearms, and ban bump stocks, high-capacity magazines, and ghost guns. These acts would result in significant protections for all Americans. Now, it's up to the Senate to send them to the president's desk without delay.
Will you join me in demanding the Senate pass common-sense gun safety reform? We can't afford to wait to protect our children, teachers, and community from gun violence – sign on as a citizen co-sponsor by adding your name to the petition today. >> [link removed]
