The Clean Water Act of 1972 set the precedent for protecting our nation’s water. Although the law increased funding to build and improve our wastewater systems, since the late 1970s federal funding for water infrastructure has been slashed by nearly 80 percent.
Our outdated wastewater systems are dumping billions of gallons of raw sewage into our waterways, flooding streets and neighborhoods, and contaminating our drinking water. And climate change is making matters worse.
To protect people's health and the environment, we need dedicated funding for our aging drinking water and wastewater systems. But federal funding is currently falling far short of what’s needed. The bipartisan infrastructure law of 2021 provided less than a tenth of the funding that our water systems need.
This is unacceptable — so we’re organizing to pass the Water Affordability Transparency Equity and Reliability (WATER) Act, federal legislation that would fund critical upgrades to our water systems to ensure that everyone has access to safe, clean and affordable water.
Food & Water Action and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Watch, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
