Is it to hunt? You bet. Self-defense? That’s even more important.
But the PRIMARY reason is that it preserves the power of the people against tyrannical governments.
In Federalist 46, James Madison, the author of the Bill of Rights, defended gun ownership when he contrasted America and our armed populace with the tyrannical governments in Europe who were “afraid to trust the people with arms.”
Joseph Story in 1833 wrote: “the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered as the Palladium of the Liberties of a republic, since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers."
We have a Second Amendment because we understand in this country that there are some things–some inalienable rights–that you cannot justly take away from a free and equal human being.
Throughout recent history, from Nazi Germany to Maoist China, the government took away the guns and restricted the rights of those populations they wanted to oppress.
That’s why I will always vote to defend the Second Amendment. I know the Constitution and I know the history of tyranny. Do you support me?
These bills the Democrats (and some Republicans) are promoting inhibit law abiding citizens from protecting themselves and raise serious Constitutional concerns.
If the 2nd Amendment matters to you, if our Constitution matters to you, then please pitch in to my re-election campaign and let’s make sure that when we take back the House, Republicans actually have a backbone.
