We want to join our friends and colleagues in celebrating the momentous victory for the residents of Massachusetts - the passage of the Work and Family Mobility Act. The passage of this bill will remove one of the Commonwealth's onerous barriers for immigrants in our state: access to a driver's license regardless of their immigration status.

For years, whether someone was able to drive in the Commonwealth was tied to immigration status. That made getting groceries, picking kids up from school, or going to a doctor’s appointment a daily risk. And not just for immigrants— the law imposed barriers for even citizens in proving their status and getting an ID.

But yesterday, the tireless efforts of countless activists finally paid off. The final barrier to a sensible licensing system was overcome when Governor Baker’s veto was overridden. Getting a driver’s license or a state I.D. will now be based on criteria related to driving and identification rather than place of birth.

At Rian we are proud to have supported the efforts to pass similar legislation for decades, and we congratulate immigrants, activists, and organizations whose years of hard work means MA residents will be able to pick their kids up from school, even if they were born somewhere else. We specially want to congratulate and thank Lenita Reason, Chrystel Murrieta Ruiz and everyone at Driving Families Forward Coalition for their incredible and tireless advocacy efforts to get this passed. We are proud to have joined your leadership and efforts to fight for this victory. Also, please take a minute to thank the legislators who took the side of justice and fairness and voted in favor of immigrants and public safety!

With the override vote yesterday, the Work and Family Mobility Act formally became a law. Starting July 2023, immigrants in our community will be able to apply for driving licenses at the RMV with the documentation from their country of origin.
