They’ve recognized my commitment to gun violence prevention and my long-time leadership on the issue of gun safety.
You know I’m a mom of seven kids. The other week, I sat down with a few of my boys, talking about the end of the school year, and one of them brought up drills.
We talked about these “intruder drills” and how my 6, 8, and 11-year-olds know where they’ll hide if someone who isn’t supposed to be in their school gets in. Then my kindergartener told me about “enhanced intruder drills,” where they practice what to do if an intruder gets into his classroom.
He’s supposed to throw something -- anything -- at them. My 8-year-old added that he used his basketball.
When I asked what they thought of those drills, they said it's “pretty scary.” And it is.
While we make it easy for anyone to purchase firearms, we arm kindergartners with playground toys to throw at someone with body armor and an assault weapon.
I mean, honestly, what in the world are we doing?
Our leaders can take tangible actions to keep our kids and communities safe, but the NRA and gun lobbyists keep funneling money into the pockets of politicians and getting in the way of life-saving change.
My husband and I own guns and advocate for safe storage: locked, unloaded, and in a safe. I want us to focus on extensive background checks, closing loopholes, and keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
Our leaders need to step up and show our kids that we care about their safety.
I’m proud to be the only statewide candidate in Arkansas who has received an endorsement from Everytown for Gun Safety.
You, your kids, and your community can count on me to always use my platform to keep people safe.
In solidarity,
Kelly
P.S. We just about hit yesterday’s fundraising goal to help us register hundreds of new voters over the weekend. If you pitched in, know that I am so so so grateful to have you with me. Thank you 💙
