I trust you enjoyed the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations over the Bank Holiday and weekend. I certainly did and even the very rainy Sunday did not put people off. From the Beacon Lighting to Sawley’s Songs of Praise and numerous Tea Parties, I had a busy, but enjoyable few days. My thanks go to everyone who organised such amazing events. The celebrations brought communities together, not just here in Erewash, but across the whole United Kingdom.
As ever, we had a busy week in Parliament, with the first stages of the legislative process for the National Security Bill and the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill. I am determined that Erewash and the East Midlands more generally gets its fair share of attention when it comes to levelling up. With just under £25m earmarked for the regeneration of Long Eaton, it’s imperative that Erewash Borough Council now submits an ambitious bid for levelling up funds for Ilkeston. Its just over 5 years since Ilkeston Train Station reopened – a day I will never forget. This brought £12.5m of investment to Ilkeston and I believe started the levelling up process for the north part of the constituency.
The Government continues to provide military support to Ukraine as well as support for families fleeing the conflict. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the families across Erewash who have opened their homes to refugees and the many community groups that provide help in other ways. The news that 2 British men have been given the death sentence is truly horrendous and I know the Foreign Secretary is doing everything she can to secure their safety.
This week saw the publication of an independent review into Smokefree 2030 policies, The Khan Review: Making Smoking Obsolete. With smoking remaining the single biggest cause of preventable illness and death, with approximately 64,000 people being killed by smoking each year, it is an issue we cannot ignore.
As I go about my constituency duties, I am always so impressed by the wide range of industry we have across Erewash. Today I will be making a number of visits to local businesses and visiting Ilkeston Town Football Club to hear about their plans for the future and their aspirations as they capitalise on last season’s success.
