Over the past few weeks, the fight for fair maps has seen a number of big developments in Florida. First, a state judge struck down Ron DeSantis’s gerrymandered map as an unconstitutional attack on the power of Black voters. Then, the manipulated map was put back into effect, and now the Florida Supreme Court has declined to take action against this egregious gerrymander. Here’s what NDRC President Kelly Burton had to say:
“Florida voters, especially Black voters, do not deserve these back and forth political games – they deserve a fair map where they are able to elect representatives of their choosing. This process is still playing out in the courts, and we remain incredibly committed to ensuring that Florida has a fair and just map in place for 2022 and beyond.”

In situations like these, we can either throw up our hands and give up, or we can double down and fight with everything we’ve got to protect our democracy and hold those who would undermine it accountable.
