Last night’s hearing was a powerful opening statement that rivals those delivered by the nation’s best prosecutors. The January 6th Committee laid out what they will show over the coming weeks: that, as Liz Cheney summarized, Trump “summoned the mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.”

What led up to January 6th was a massive effort by Trump and his allies to convince the US population that the 2020 election was rigged, even though they knew it wasn’t.

While other officials resigned, Elise Stefanik helped spread the Big Lie that led to a deadly attack on our Capitol and the law enforcement officers who bravely defended it. As Officer Edwards testified last night: “It was carnage. It was chaos.”

Knowing her own involvement is perhaps why she is trying to discredit this bipartisan committee and distract the American people. As one of the Republicans’ main spokespeople, she can try to spin the facts and gaslight us, but we know the truth.

Stefanik is a continued threat to our democracy and we must remove her from office by voting her out in November. I know we can do it together.
