We're shifting more of our focus from canvassing and making phone calls to community events this summer, but there's still a few canvassing and text bank shifts we have on the calendar! We need your help to reach voters about the July 26 election! Find a shift that works for you below. |
Don't want to knock doors or send texts? Fund someone who will, because this work that we are doing on the ground is so necessary to create a more equitable North Carolina. |

Thom Tillis is Working on a Gun Reform Bill
After the tragic shootings in the last few weeks, one of NC's US Senators, Thom Tillis, is working on a bipartisan bill with Senators Cornyn (R-TX), Sinema (D-AZ) and Murphy (D-CT). No word about what will be in this bipartisan bill, but the US House of Representatives did pass a bill that would expand background checks for buying guns, raise the age to purchase some semi-automatic weapons to 21 and outlaw high-capacity magazines. Congress is also considering a second bill called the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, that would allow people to petition the courts to take guns away from someone who is proven to be a danger to themselves or others. It would also create an incentive program for states to create their own red flag laws- NC does not have red flag laws currently.
Please call both Senator Burr and Senator Tillis to voice your support for gun reform bills to help save lives.
Sample Script from OMG Vote: Hi, My name is [Insert name here] and I live in [insert city here]. I am a constituent in NC and I'm calling to urge Senator Burr/Tillis to support red flag laws, universal background checks, and an assault weapons ban. Thank you! Senator Burr: 202-224-3154 Senator Tillis: 202-224-6342 |

Juneteenth
On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Union General Gordon Granger delivered the news that the Confederacy surrendered in Virginia and North Carolina, that enslaved Black people were emancipated from the Confederacy. This happened a two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The confederacy officially ended on April 26, 1865 in Virginia and Durham, NC.
We hope everyone has a joyful day on June 19 to reflect back on all that has been overcome and celebrate the beautiful culture we have throughout NC. But we also must remember that we still do not have real racial equality in our country and we have continuous work to do to achieve a more just and equitable future.
