House Begins “Marathon of Hearings” on Events of Jan. 6: A Media Event
Wall Street Journal: The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol began a marathon of public hearings with a prime-time session Thursday evening aimed at convincing a divided nation that former President Donald Trump’s claims of a stolen election incited his followers to try to interrupt the peaceful transfer of power ( Wall Street Journal). Kimberly Stassel: What’s actually missing in this special sauce of prime TV hours, slick videos and positive press is the one ingredient truly vital for public interest: credibility ( Wall Street Journal). The committee’s resource for the media event: ( January 6) The committee features no Republican-appointed members — two Republicans appointed by Democrats ( January 6). Nancy Pelosi Refuses to Pass Bill Providing More Protection for SCOTUS Justices
Daily Wire: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) denied House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy‘s (R-CA) second unanimous consent request to immediately pass a Supreme Court security bill on Thursday, announcing that the House will vote on the bill next week ( Daily Wire). New York Post: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi got in a huff with a reporter while insisting Thursday that Supreme Court justices have adequate protection — even after a serious bid to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh at his Maryland home was foiled just a day earlier. As Pelosi left her weekly press conference, she stopped to address a reporter who shouted: “You said the justices are protected, but there was an attempt on Justice Kavanaugh’s life.” “And he’s protected,” Pelosi snapped back. “He’s protected. The justices are protected.” Congressional Republicans have urged the House to approve a Senate-passed bill that would give the nation’s leading jurists and their families the same level of security as legislators and White House officials. The Senate passed the bill by unanimous consent, but the measure has languished before the House for the past month ( New York Post). Tom Elliot: @SpeakerPelosi snaps at a reporter asking her about the threat on Justice Kavanaugh’s life: “They are protected” ( Twitter).

National Gas Prices Hit $5 Per Gallon for First Time in History
National Review: The national average price of gas in the U.S. soared to a new record-high on Thursday, surpassing $5 per gallon for the first time ever, according to data from GasBuddy. The grim milestone comes just two months after the national average price of gas surpassed $4 per-gallon for the first time since 2008. Days later, on March 7, the national average broke the previous all-time record when it hit $4.10 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. Prices have risen 66 cents per gallon over the past month, the organization reported ( National Review). ABC: As consumer frustration has mounted in recent months, President Joe Biden has faced criticism over his handling of cost increases in essentials like fuel and groceries. Only 37% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the economic recovery, according to an ABC/Ipsos poll released on Sunday ( ABC). RNC Research: ABC: Gas prices are so high that one Michigan county’s police department has “blown through their fuel budget” and will no longer respond to every 911 call in-person ( Twitter).

Democrats Express Dissatisfaction with White House Over Not Getting Ahead of Crises
The Hill: Democrats are growing increasingly frustrated by what they say is a flat-footed White House that is slow to catch up on solving a seemingly never-ending cascade of problems in the face of an unrelenting news cycle. They point to the recent baby formula shortage as the latest example of how President Biden has failed to get ahead of the story, allowing Republicans to set the narrative as yet another failure for the White House. But they also highlighted Biden’s lag on other issues at the top of voter’s minds: inflation and gas prices. “It’s really simple: ‘Be the president!,” said one Democratic strategist frustrated by the administration. “I realize it’s tough and you’re drinking out of a fire hose every single day, but there are things you can do to control the public perception and they haven’t done any of that.” Democratic strategist Christy Setzer said the White House has shown some naivete in recent months in trying to control the message ( Hill). Daily Wire: The president has also been criticized for being slow off the mark on gas and food prices, as well as inflation in general ( Daily Wire).

President Biden Tells Reporters to Report More Fairly on His Administration
Politico: Joe Biden doesn’t do many off-the-record chats with reporters. So the traveling White House press corps was surprised and intrigued when the president dropped by Air Force One’s press section for one such session with them during a recent trip to the West Coast. But Biden wasn’t just there to field questions. He had his own message to deliver. According to multiple people familiar with the off-the-record session, he used much of his time with reporters to criticize the quality and tenor of press coverage of his administration. There is growing frustration by the president and his family that he is not receiving the kind of generally more positive coverage they believe he deserves — that too often attention is focused on staff turnover and poor poll numbers and not a robust jobs market and America’s relatively strong economic recovery ( Politico). Daily Wire: Biden hasn’t done a sit down with a media outlet in 119 days. Instead, the president did a softball interview with late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday ( Daily Wire).

COVID Vaccines to Be Disseminated for Children Under 5
Wall Street Journal: The Biden administration outlined plans to roll out vaccines for children under age 5 in conjunction with educational and outreach efforts, if the shots are approved by federal regulators. Vaccinations for children under age 5 could begin as soon as June 21 if the shots from Moderna Inc. and Pfizer Inc. and partner BioNTech SE are authorized by the Food and Drug Administration. Ten million initial doses will be made available. “We are on the cusp of having safe, highly effective vaccines for kids under five,” Ashish Jha, White House Covid-19 response coordinator, said on Thursday. If authorized, the vaccinations would also be available through locations such as public-health clinics, community health centers and pharmacies. The administration also plans to make vaccinations available at more than 100 children’s hospitals and health systems as well as through pop-up clinics at children’s museums ( Wall Street Journal). KOMO: As of this week, about 1.45 million of the 2.5 million available doses of Pfizer have been ordered, and about 850,000 of available Moderna shots have been ordered, officials said. More orders are expected in the coming days. Young children are the last group of Americans who have not been recommended to get COVID-19 vaccinations. Up to about 20 million U.S. children under 5 would become eligible for vaccination if the government authorizes one or both shots ( KOMO).

Washington Post Fires Reporter Felicia Sonmez
CNN: The Washington Post on Thursday fired Felicia Sonmez, the reporter who has been extraordinarily critical of her colleagues and the newspaper’s leadership over the last several days, two people familiar with the matter told CNN on Thursday. The Post’s termination notice, a copy of which was seen by CNN, said Sonmez was fired for “misconduct that includes insubordination, maligning your coworkers online and violating The Post’s standards on workplace collegiality and inclusivity” ( CNN). Axios: In recent days, Sonmez’s critical tweets sparked a series of public spats between Post staffers, which quickly became the fodder of fascination amongst media junkies inside and outside of The Post. The situation put the Washington Post in a difficult situation, making the storied institution the subject of a major story, instead of the chronicler of one ( Axios).

Disney Fires Senior Executive Who Was Widely Seen as Next CEO
New York Times: The Walt Disney Company has abruptly fired Peter Rice, its most senior television content executive, citing an ill fit with Disney’s corporate culture, according to three people briefed on the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential information. Mr. Rice, chairman of Disney General Entertainment Content, a division of the company that makes more than 300 shows annually for platforms like ABC, the Disney Channel, Disney+, Hulu and FX, was ousted by Bob Chapek, Disney’s chief executive, in a brief meeting on Wednesday, these people said. Mr. Rice, who has also overseen ABC News, most recently renewed his contract at Disney in August. It ran until the end of 2024. Disney will pay him out, the people said ( New York Times). Wall Street Journal: Disney gave no reason for Mr. Rice’s firing, but people familiar with the matter say that Mr. Chapek called Mr. Rice into his office on Wednesday and informed him that he was no longer a “good fit” for the company. Mr. Rice’s name had been floated as a possible successor to Robert Iger when he was still helming Disney, but senior Disney officials often shot down that talk. Executives in Hollywood and some news reports had also mentioned Mr. Rice’s name in recent months as a possible successor to Mr. Chapek, the CEO ( Wall Street Journal).

NASA Prepares to Research UFO’s
CNN: NASA is putting a team together to study unidentified aerial phenomena, popularly known as UFOs, the US space agency said Thursday. The team will gather data on “events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena — from a scientific perspective,” the agency said. NASA said it was interested in UAPs from a security and safety perspective. There was no evidence UAPs are extraterrestrial in origin, NASA added. The study will begin this fall and is expected to take nine months. “NASA believes that the tools of scientific discovery are powerful and apply here also,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, the associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC ( CNN).
