Yesterday, like so many of you, I watched 11-year-old Uvalde shooting survivor Miah Cerrillo recount to Congress the day she witnessed her teacher get shot and killed. The day she smeared her classmate's blood on herself and pretended to be dead.
I watched as her father, Miguel Cerrillo, fought back tears as he explained how his once happy-go-lucky child is now traumatized and terrified to return to school.
Just hours later, all but five Republicans — including Mike Garcia — chose to ignore the searing testimony and voted against basic common-sense gun legislation aimed at curbing horrific tragedies like these.
It's reprehensible and it's cowardly. There are tangible, concrete steps Congress can take right now to make sure tragedies like these don't happen again, but Mike Garcia and the GOP would rather look away.
This is exactly why our race is so important. Yesterday, House Democrats passed a bill that would:
Raise the semi-automatic purchase age to 21,
Ban the sale of large capacity magazines,
Crack down on gun trafficking,
Outlaw bump stocks,
And outlaw ghost guns.
Laws like these save lives. We owe it to survivors like Miah to enact them. I shouldn't have to say this, but nobody's campaign, political career, or NRA contributions are worth more than the lives of our children.
Christy Smith is running an entirely grassroots campaign that doesn't rely on corporate PAC or special interest money. Your generous support is key to flipping CA-27 from red to blue. As one of only 14 "toss-up" races in the country, the path to holding our Democratic majority in Congress goes straight through CA-27. Will you pitch in and help flip this seat red to blue once and for all?
