In the aftermath of a successful January 6th operation would you have been detained and imprisoned by your local militiamen?

Dear John,

Tonight we are hearing testimony from the first session of the January 6th Commission.

The individuals that planned January 6th represent an ongoing threat to the Federal Republic. I’ll leave what happened that day to the investigators and members of the Commission, I am writing to you today rather to tell you about what could have happened the day after January 6th.

I live in Parker, Colorado, a quiet Denver suburb located in Douglas County, the county sandwiched between Colorado Springs and Denver. After serving 18 years in the Marines I was drawn to Parker because of the good schools, the quiet and stillness of its sprawling neigbhorhoods, and all of the other young families living here.

However, this veil of suburban paradise was lifted when I learned about my county's local right-wing militia, FEC United.

Members of the FEC United militia at a counter Black Lives Matter protest held in Civic Center Park in Denver.
Based out of a mega church in Castle Rock, Colorado. The FEC United militia group has made a name for itself by threatening journalists, working with election fraudsters like Tina Peters, and bringing a right-wing paramilitary presence to anti lockdown and anti Black Lives matter rallies.

Even Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO), my opponent, isn’t extreme enough for them. At the 2022 CD4 Republican assembly, FEC United helped Buck’s primary opponent, Bob Lewis, score a massive victory that nearly saw Buck kicked off the ballot.

Groups like FEC United are especially concerning to me given the increasingly close ties between them and law enforcement both on the local and federal levels.

As the January 6th Commission plans to show, had Trump succeeded in getting Vice President Pence to not certify the election results, he planned on issuing a state of emergency which would have allowed him to enact measures to temporarily suspend the Constitution and Habeus Corpus (the legal concept that protects us from the government detaining us without cause).

This would have allowed President Trump to deputize groups like FEC United, the Proud Boys, and the Three Percenters who would thereby have the legal grounds to arrest and indefinitely detain political enemies of the MAGA movement. These enemies?

Democrats and anyone else who disagreed with their vision of the so called “great steal.”

I know the terror and devastation that extremist militia groups can cause when given power. I know it because I saw it as a witness to the Iraqi Civil War while deployed there. I refuse to see my beloved country fall victim to the same type of political motivated hate and violence - can you chip in to help us fight back against right-wing militarism in Eastern Colorado? Armed groups who favor gaining power via brute force over elections are a fundamental threat to our Democracy. Let’s start pushing back - our way of life and Democracy depend on it.
