The House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack will air the first of its public primetime hearings tonight starting at 8pm Eastern!

We’ll be watching along with everyone else in America.

These public hearings are a critical step forward in the process of accountability for everyone involved in the attempted coup, but one thing is clear already before they even start: Trump is guilty and should be prosecuted for sedition immediately.

In January of this year, the Department of Justice charged the Oath Keepers, a Trump supporting extremist militia that participated in the planning and execution of the attack, with seditious conspiracy. Earlier this week, the DOJ arrested the leaders of the Proud Boys, another violent extremist group on the ground in DC at the Capitol, for seditious conspiracy.

More than 725 people have been arrested, at least 165 have pleaded guilty, while several dozen have already received prison time. They deserve it. If you read the actual code, it’s pretty clear what they did was sedition -- and that’s a crime. A serious crime worth 20 years in prison.

18 U.S. Code § 2384 - Seditious Conspiracy:

If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.

This is what happened live on TV on January 6. We saw and heard it with our own eyes. Trump organized a mob, chose their targets, made the goal clear, and incited them to act. And we even learned earlier this week from the Washington Post that Trump tried to get the Secret Service to let him join them.

The Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys aren’t enough. If we let the last President get away with an attempted coup, how could we possibly expect to stop the next one? Trump must be held accountable. Add your name now.
