John, we need to talk about Doug Mastriano’s statement on the prevention of gun violence. It’s exactly the kind of far-right extremism we’ve been warning could take over in Pennsylvania if we don’t expand and mobilize the electorate for this election and beyond. More on his statement in a moment — but first, will you consider making a donation to help us register and mobilize the Commonwealth’s Black, brown, and young voters? →

Following the recent massacre in Uvalde, Texas, a video surfaced from 2018 of Doug Mastriano comparing advocacy of common-sense gun violence prevention to Nazi Germany. This is a false comparison similar to one previously declared historically inaccurate by the Anti-Defamation League. Mastriano’s response? He doubled down, shared the video himself, and called it historically accurate.

Gun violence and white supremacy have had a long history together in our country. So when far-right extremists make false comparisons between the prevention of gun violence and Nazi Germany’s confiscation of guns from Jewish people and other political opponents, it’s important to be clear:

They’re certainly not trying to protect our youth, for whom guns are now the number one cause of death. In Uvalde, a single man, armed with an AR-15, massacred 19 children and 2 school teachers, making it the second-deadliest school shooting. It was after this massacre that Mastriano doubled down on his statement.

They’re not trying to protect Black and brown people, who are a majority of the victims of gun violence, whose children are 14 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than white children of the same age, and for whom “gun rights” only exist in theory. An explicit white supremacist armed with an AR-15 recently massacred ten Black people in Buffalo. And when the “justice system” looks the other way while Black and brown people are murdered for the suspicion of simply having a gun, these self-described “gun rights advocates” are overwhelmingly on the side of the murderer. If they truly believed all Americans have a right to be armed, they would be outraged by every single one of those murders. Clearly, it’s not just about guns.

Senator Doug Mastriano is the Republican nominee for governor in the upcoming November general election in Pennsylvania. Our work in expanding the electorate and engaging and empowering communities of color and the youth to not only register to vote but to vote in every election is now more important than ever. We must work hard to register communities who have historically been left out of the political process, vote our values and elect the legislators that reflect the change we want to see in Pennsylvania.

Will you join us today in standing up against white supremacy by making a contribution to our work to expand the electorate and give equal representation to Black, brown, and young voters?

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in under-represented communities of color and immigrant communities. We will register them to vote, provide education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize people to vote in every election.
