This week, we celebrated World Oceans Day and World Environment Day.

Being born and raised on the Olympic Peninsula, Derek has seen first-hand the value of our fragile ecosystem and the natural resources that we rely on. Our livelihoods depend on the health of our environment, and we must take every measure to protect it – not just one week out of the year – but every day.

Last year, Derek relaunched the Puget Sound Recovery Caucus to ensure that the federal government steps up to support regional efforts to protect our Sound, restore populations of endangered species, and uphold Tribal treaty rights. This partnership has enabled recovery efforts like:

✅ Preventing pollution from stormwater runoff;
✅ Protecting and restoring biodiversity and;
✅ Restoring and re-opening shellfish beds.

As a father, Derek wants to make sure that the future brings a robust environment where the next generations will be able to thrive and enjoy the same economic opportunities that were afforded to past generations. The battle against the climate crisis has never been more pressing, which is why he’s pushed for increased funding for clean energy and is advocating for a bipartisan solution to the acidification of our oceans.

We only get one Earth, and we have a moral obligation to keep fighting for real solutions that protect the environment and its inhabitants.
