As the January 6th Committee begins its public hearings this evening American viewers will see widely different realities depending on what channel they turn to. Right-wing cable networks like Fox don’t plan to cover the hearings at all — or only as a prop to reinforce their own line that the 1/6 attack on our democracy was an “insignificant” event.
Each day that goes by we drift further apart — and it gets harder for our political system to address the challenges we are facing.
But the biggest danger today is that Americans will get so frustrated and depressed that they “check out” and stop participating in our electoral system. That is something Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans would like to see happen — and we need to make sure it doesn’t.
That is why it's more important than ever that we engage every voter in this 2022 election.
I disagree with those claiming that “most Americans have moved on” and are no longer interested in the January 6th attack on our democracy.
While Americans are rightly focused on kitchen table issues, health care, COVID, their kids' schooling, and more, the hearings on the conspiracy to overturn our legitimate election results are vital to getting accountability and purging violent extremists from our politics.
I'll be watching tonight — and am so proud of all those serving on the Jan. 6 Select Committee, especially our own MD representative, Jamie Raskin.
Onwards,
Chris
