Dear neighbor:
This week, House Democrats passed two critical pieces of gun violence prevention legislation. The first is the Protecting Our Kids Act, which will raise the minimum age for purchasing semi-automatic weapons from 18 to 21 and ban high-capacity magazines, among other measures. The second is the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, legislation to keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves or others.
And in the coming weeks, the House will take additional steps on gun violence prevention by bringing to the floor the Active Shooter Alert Act and holding a hearing to advance an assault weapons ban bill. These are life-saving measures that are widely supported by the American people, and now move to the Senate for consideration.
To join the call for action, I spoke on the House floor to honor the victims of the Uvalde shooting and call attention to the immense danger of AR-15 style assault weapons. WATCH:
Here's a look at what else I've been working on:
- On Memorial Day, I delivered remarks at the Los Angeles National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony, as well as the Redondo Beach ceremony, to pay tribute to the U.S. Military members who lost their lives while serving our nation.
- I spoke on a panel at the Summit of the Americas on building democratic resilience and fighting corruption across the Western Hemisphere.
- I introduced a bill to ensure federal prisons are better prepared in the event of a natural disaster or public health emergency.
- I spoke on the House floor about the GOP’s harmful attacks on LGBTQI+ rights.
