Friend,
This week the House of Representatives met to discuss an important bill
that would address gun violence in America. The urge is clear, we must
pass comprehensive legislation that protects our communities. We are
pleased that the House passed the [ [link removed] ]Protect Our Kids Act (H.R. 7910) on
Wednesday, June 8th.
This legislation calls for the purchase age of assault-style weapons to
rise to age 21, bans bump stocks, requires background checks, and more.
These common-sense life-saving measures will protect teachers, students,
and community members. We know members of the House did their jobs. We
especially want to thank Nevada Representatives Dina Titus, Susie Lee, and
Steven Horsford for their support of [ [link removed] ]H.R. 7910. Nevada is proud to lead
on the gun violence issue and we owe it to our legislature for their work
on background checks, ghost guns, and safe storage.

While the House was working on major legislation, the Senate has been
debating their own bipartisan gun violence bill that currently looks like
it will include background checks and incentives for states to implement
extreme risk protection orders. These are steps forward but they are not
enough. We need the GOP to stop cowering to the gun lobby and start
prioritizing safety. The time to support laws like upping the age to own
an AR-15 is NOW.

In the coming days, there will be more talks in the Senate and hopefully,
they can improve upon the current proposal to include more policies that
will reduce gun violence. We have not had a federal gun violence
prevention bill in nearly 30 years. We will keep you updated about the
relevant bills as they move forward or as they die.

violence survivors discussing their experiences and hope for the future.
