Imagine if your current governor decided to throw out the existing voter rolls and forced you and every other eligible person in District of Columbia to re-register in order to be able to vote.

This might sound over the top crazy, but it’s exactly what Doug Mastriano, the Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial nominee and January 6th insurrectionist, has in mind. This punitive plan of his seeks to prevent election fraud—even though it would most likely be in direct violation of existing federal law. And state law. And the constitution.

Ideas like this didn’t come from a vacuum. They’re byproducts of Trump’s Big Lie that the 2020 presidential election was rigged (spoiler: it wasn’t). What was another byproduct of that lie? The attack on the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, which Doug Mastriano attended. 

The January 6th insurrection isn’t behind us. People who stormed the Capitol are now running for office across the country. That’s why it’s so important to watch the January 6th Commission Hearings and spread the word about what happened and who was responsible. The live televised hearings—which start tonight—will give the American people a full accounting of the conspiracy Trump and his allies hatched to overturn the will of voters, their efforts to cover up their involvement, and their ongoing plan to sabotage our elections.

This nonpartisan committee has spent months investigating the events leading up to and on January 6th, and interviewing individuals with firsthand knowledge of the conspiracy, including members of Trump’s inner circle. The evidence the committee will show is the product of a rigorous investigation, led by career prosecutors, that followed the facts and the law.

And from what we’ve seen so far, it’s damning stuff. Trump and his allies engaged in a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, encouraged violent extremists to prevent Congress from certifying the election results, and promised to pardon them for their crimes. 

And the scheme to dismantle our democracy, take away our freedom to vote, and sabotage future elections continues. Doug Mastriano is just one of 57 candidates currently running for office who had a hand in the January 6th insurrection.

Those who participated in the violence at the Capitol that day can never be trusted again. These hearings are key to holding everyone involved accountable to ensure we never experience another January 6th and that our elected representatives respect the will of the people.
