Dear John,

Just weeks ago, the nation was stunned by the horrific murder of ten people in a Buffalo supermarket. As the ADL Center on Extremism quickly assessed, this was an act of domestic terrorism fueled by hatred, racism, white supremacy and antisemitic conspiracy theories. I want to thank those of you who have taken action in light of this terrible attack. Today I want to share insights with you on how the ADL government relations team is working to fight antisemitism and hate and invite you to join us at an important discussion of how to counter these dangers.

Following the attack, we immediately reached out in solidarity to our partners who represent and work with the Black communities that were targeted to offer our partnership. We joined with the National Urban League to bring a coalition of organizations together

to demand that the White House hold a Summit on combatting hate, white supremacy and all forms of extremism. We also worked with the NAACP to get a vital meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland to discuss how to most effectively combat the spread of hate online, enlist social media companies in the fight and hold them accountable for policies that amplify extremist views and dangerous conspiracy theories.

Within days, the U.S House of Representatives took up key pieces of legislation that the ADL community has been supporting for years. Our federal lobbyist team worked around the clock to gain support for the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act and the

Nonprofit Security Grant Improvement Act. This was a collective effort thanks to the mobilization of thousands of ADL supporters that showed up to meet with, write to and call their Representatives to support these critical bills. Both passed in the House! We continue to advocate for the Senate to move on these bills and thank you for continuing the fight.

ONE YEAR LATER, ARE WE SAFER?

On Monday, June 13th, ADL will hold a virtual event with the McCain Institute, hosting President Biden’s Homeland Security Advisor and Deputy Attorney General to discuss how to counter threats like these and how policymakers are helping secure communities against them.

Register now to be part of this important conversation.

We are continuously finding ways to work with state and local policymakers to advance initiatives that combat hate. Our national team has been working with ADL’s 25 regional offices to provide policy recommendations for Governors, State Attorneys General and legislators who want to take action at the state level.

PROGRESS, STATE BY STATE

- New York this week enacted a law that gives the Attorney General authority to investigate social media platforms and strengthen remedies for the state and victims in the wake of hate crimes.
- We have had great success this year in fighting hate online through our

Backspace Hate initiative, which protects victims of online hate and harassment and helps ensure that educators, law enforcement and the public know about the dangers of online hate and how to address it.
- This year, Maryland has enacted

an ADL-drafted law to analyze swatting and make recommendations on legislation to combat it.
- In March,

Washington state enacted a cyberharassment law.
- Connecticut enacted a

new grant program to educate about cybersafety, the dangers of cyberharassment and the impact of the 2021 cyberharassment law that ADL helped pass in the state.
This week Colorado’s governor signed into law

a state-level nonprofit security grant program that will make state funds available to help secure synagogues, Jewish schools, Jewish community centers and other faith-based congregations and nonprofits.
Often we play defense, trying to stop bills that we view as dangerous or harmful, or at least trying to make them less bad. That’s why our Florida office opposed that state’s new “Don’t Say Gay” bill, and it’s why our New Orleans office worked in partnership with other groups to stop an even harsher bill in Louisiana.

Every day, we find ways to work together with communities, government officials and other organizations to confront the dangers that we all face — antisemitism, extremism, online hate and more. In fact,

Monday’s event with the McCain Institute and the White House was in the works long before the shooting in Buffalo — but it’s even more urgent now. We hope you will join us.

ADL volunteers and supporters are crucial partners in all of our work. Thanks to all of you who have joined the ADL community’s federal and state lobby days, sent an email or called your legislators. Policy makers need to hear from their constituents about the issues that are coming before them. Your voices are needed and have been a critical part of our recent success.

There is much more work to do, and we look forward to continuing to fight this fight alongside you.
Sincerely,

Max Sevillia
VP of Government Relations, Advocacy and Community Engagement (GRACE)
