John,
We are in a climate emergency — a crisis we can only confront when our government steps up and launches a mobilization on the scale of World War II to justly transition to 100% renewable energy.
And as of this week, we’re one step closer to a Green New Deal that will get us there:
President Biden’s decision to invoke the Defense Production Act to accelerate solar manufacturing is a great start, but we hope more significant executive actions will follow — like securing funding and ensuring every worker can join a union and is paid a living wage. Our lives and our future literally depend on it.
With the 2022 midterm elections in full swing, there’s never been a better time to push President Biden and other Democratic leaders to do everything they can to tackle climate change head-on. Please donate $10 – or whatever you can afford – to support Sunrise’s organizing efforts in the months ahead. It's on us to lead the way.
Sunrise supported the similar Energy Security and Independence Act of 2022 — introduced by Congresswoman Cori Bush, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Congressman Jason Crow — to strengthen America’s renewable energy supply chain through the Defense Production Act and invest in programs to lower utility prices.
But we can’t stop there. Energy analysts are warning of power grid failure this summer across much of the country, but especially in the Upper Midwest and West Coast. And much of Texas is already staring down a multi-day heat wave in the triple digits starting on Friday.
We are at a crossroads. Do we continue to rely on fossil fuel corporations making record profits at the expense of working families, or do we begin a mass mobilization of our government and society to transition to the renewable energy future we need?
In solidarity,
Ellen, Sunrise
