Bricks, high heels, and sheer determination was the scene in New York City in the summer of 1969. Led by trans women of color, a resistance was born and what would later be called ‘Pride’ began. This moment in LGBTIQ history has come to represent the universal fight for equality and visibility. Since then, Pride has been celebrated with protests, parades, emotional narratives of ‘coming out,’ and acts of good trouble.

At OutRight, we are marking Pride with a call-to-action. Through our Pride With A Purpose campaign, we are honoring those who advocate for LGBTIQ rights. At the same time, we are celebrating our progress forged by activism while drawing attention to the fact that our work must continue. To learn more about this campaign, go here ([link removed]) .

In the next few weeks, OutRight is also publishing Pride Around the World ([link removed]) . In its second year, this report will provide a snapshot of what Pride means and how it manifests today across the globe. It outlines the challenges, the evolution, the diverse communities, and the opportunities to further human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere.

Happy Pride! And while you honor its importance, remember the resistance. Remember the indifference we suffer. Remember our purpose as a diverse community.

In solidarity,

Fox Deatry
Director of Communications and Marketing

Pride Around the World
While public pride and other visibility events are not the ultimate goal or even a key priority for every movement, they can serve as a useful barometer of our movement’s ability to organize and voice its demands in various parts of the world. OutRight’s 2022 Pride Around the World report provides a global snapshot of what Pride looks like and means in different countries. Centered around seven case studies, the report aims to interrogate the purpose, meaning, and impact of Pride and to inspire activists by sharing strategies and approaches from diverse contexts. Supported by Google.org, the report also tracks the proliferation of visibility events around the world, including a focus on countries in which Pride is celebrated outside capital cities. Learn more when we release the Pride Around The World report – authored by a team of OutRight staff led by our senior director of law, policy and research, Neela Ghoshal – on June 22nd.
