John,
How is the Maine GOP celebrating this year’s Pride Month? By throwing their full support behind the bigoted Paul LePage and a party platform designed to dismantle the rights of LGBTQ+ Mainers. Once again, Republicans have chosen to double down on hating us instead of helping us.
As the first openly gay Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, I was proud to join Maine Dems this week to call out the GOP for their attacks on LGBTQ+ Mainers and support of Paul LePage. As anti-LGBTQ+ legislation sweeps the country, we need to trust that our elected officials will do everything they can to protect our rights — not take them away.
Governor Janet Mills has demonstrated the type of leadership on LGBTQ+ issues that Mainers deserve. LePage was the first governor in the country to veto legislation that would ban conversion therapy, but Gov. Mills banned the horrifying and harmful practice during her first year.
Now, anti-gay organizations in Maine are rallying around LePage and counting on him to lead the fight for disgusting and degrading legislation like the Florida Don’t Say Gay Bill. We cannot let Paul LePage and the Maine GOP win.
Thank you,
Speaker Ryan Fecteau
