Dear Friend,

Happy Pride month! My name is Rebby (they/them), I’m 33, and I’m a biracial nonbinary person. I’m a long-time organizer and educator hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina.

As the Director of Education Policy at Equality NC, an organization dedicated to securing rights and protections for the LGBTQ+ community, I oversee the development of youth organizing in rural areas and help young adults understand their power.

I’m also a volunteer at NextGen America and I’m here to tell you the story of why I organize.

It all started when I attempted to create a gay-straight alliance on my college campus. The group was denied by school administration. From that moment, I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to activism and building collective power to fight discrimination and create change.

As a NextGen volunteer, I’m able to do just that. I’m able to follow my passions, and bring my expertise and experience organizing LGBTQ+ youth to voter registration efforts in North Carolina.

Young people are our walking future and have more political power than any other group of folks right now.

I believe in the power of voting because I know that everyday Black trans people are fighting for basic rights, and when young people vote, it ensures that the LGTBQ+ community is able to thrive. Most of all, I’m fighting to increase representation of trans and non-binary experiences in our society, and that starts with the democratic process.
