Young Scholars Program Spotlight:

Dr. Vanessa Rodriguez

Dr. Vanessa Rodriguez spent more than a decade teaching in New York City (NYC) public schools. Her own experiences as a teacher and as a first-generation college graduate of Puerto Rican descent led Dr. Rodriguez to pursue an Ed.D. in human development and education from Harvard University in 2016 and become an early care and education researcher (ECE) working to influence public policy. Dr. Rodriguez conducts mixed-methods research that amplifies educators’ perspectives using humanizing, trauma-informed, and social justice-oriented methods. In 2020, she became a Young Scholars Program (YSP) awardee and a member of the Foundation’s 16th cohort. Stemming from this work, her recent manuscript explores the mental health and well-being of female prekindergarten teachers during the COVID-19 lockdown in NYC (Rodriguez et al., 2022).

YSP LOI Deadline TODAY

The Foundation's Young Scholars Program funds implementation research that is policy- and practice-relevant, and that examines the preparation, competency, compensation, well-being, and ongoing professional learning of the early care and education workforce. Research awards are up to $225,000 for primary research and up to $180,000 for secondary data analysis.

Who Should Apply?
YSP is an open competition; applicants need not be nominated to apply. The Foundation regards diversity as an asset for building a strong and productive society and is committed to diversity and equity in scholarship and through our grantees. To increase the diversity of research perspectives, the Foundation encourages applications from:

  • Scholars who are from underrepresented groups that have historically experienced poverty, racism, prejudice, and discrimination. Such groups include, but are not limited to, researchers of color, first-generation college graduates, culturally and linguistically diverse scholars, and researchers from low-income communities
  • Scholars who represent a variety of disciplines and methodological approaches

Eligible researchers must have received their doctoral degrees (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., Psy.D., J.D., etc.) between January 1, 2013 and June 30, 2021. Physician applicants must have received their M.D. degrees between January 1, 2010 and June 30, 2021.

The deadline to submit a Letter of Intent is Thursday, June 9, 2022 at
8 PM EDT | 7 PM CDT | 6 PM MDT | 5 PM PDT.
