John,
Tonight at 8 pm, I’ll be watching the January 6th hearing, and I hope you will be too. This is an important moment for our democracy.
The committee investigating the insurrection has been hard at work for a year, interviewing witnesses, pursuing documents and getting a clearer picture of what happened on January 6th and the weeks and months leading up to that day’s attack.
We’ve already seen hints from committee members about what we’ll learn tonight: Congressman Jamie Raskin recently said that the committee has found evidence of “a lot more than incitement” by Donald Trump. We’ve also seen escalation from the Department of Justice: Enrique Tarrio, leader of the extremist Proud Boys group, and four members of the group were recently indicted on seditious conspiracy charges.
We have already seen enough evidence to know that Trump and members of his inner circle like John Eastman, Mark Meadows, and Jeffrey Clark likely committed crimes as part of their efforts to overturn the election. We may learn even more damning information during these hearings, but regardless: the evidence that they committed multiple crimes is strong, and the DOJ should investigate and swiftly act as the evidence dictates.
Here are a few resources to help you make sense of it all:
- I recently co-authored a report laying out what we already know about Trump’s potential criminal culpability for January 6th and the efforts to overturn an election, and what to watch for during the hearings.
- CREW has a new set of frequently asked questions about the hearings, laying out the powers of the committee, what we can expect at the end, what legislation might be proposed, and more.
-
We also have a comprehensive timeline of CREW’s investigations and legal and policy actions to get answers and accountability for the insurrection.
-
Tomorrow at 11 am, I’ll be discussing the hearing, what we learned, and what we can expect to see next with Barb McQuade, former US Attorney and University of Michigan law professor on Twitter Spaces—click here to listen or set a reminder to be alerted when the conversation starts.
These hearings are a key moment in the fight for accountability for the insurrection—and to make sure it can’t happen again. All of us at CREW will be watching, and we hope you’ll join us in watching and then keeping up the pressure for answers and real accountability.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
