It’s my story...
Hi there Friend,
Today is Cyber Monday, and I know you’re seeing sales in your inbox, but this email is different: I’m not here to sell you anything. I want to tell you a story.
On January 15th, I was sitting in New York’s state legislature with hundreds of other advocates. I could hear a pin drop. After all, we weren’t supposed to make any noise while voting was in session. But when we received the news that conversion therapy would be banned in the state of New York, we couldn’t help but erupt into cheers and applause.
I will remember this forever. For that minute, I was relieved from the worry over whether the bill would pass or what legacy we were creating for LGBTQ people in New York. Instead of thinking about the next steps of implementing this exciting news, I took a minute to celebrate! I was celebrating with the nearly 10,000 young people who would be saved from the trauma that I had endured as a young person.
As a survivor of conversion therapy, I hear stories like mine so often. Stories of young people being subjected to the dangerous and discredited practice. I knew I had to be present for all the kids like me, who just want to be themselves so I joined The Trevor Project as their Head of Advocacy and Government Affairs. I work every day to support the passage of laws that protect LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy across the country and across the globe. When I heard New York was about to pass this bill, I knew I had to be there.
That was a time in my life that I will never forget. Listen to my story to hear more about why that minute was so powerful — it’ll only take a minute:
