NHCDP Officers Ratify Wave Transit Resolution And Issue Press Release

On Sunday, NHCDP Officers voted to ratify a resolution presented at the November 18th monthly meeting. A non-binding straw poll demonstrated overwhelming support for the resolution, but the meeting lacked a quorum. Under the NCDP Plan of Organization, the County Officers can act on behalf of the County Executive Committee when it is not in session, which they did on Sunday. The party also issued a press release to announce adoption of the resolution.

Three Judge Panel Meets Today To Consider Congressional Districts; Congressional Filing Postponed

A Three-Judge Panel in Wake County will meet today at 9 a.m. to consider objections to the congressional districts drawn by the General Assembly on November 15th. The Plaintiffs in Harper v. Lewis contend that the redrawn districts continued to be unconstitutional gerrymanders. You can read about their objections here. The court had previously stayed filing for congress. Broadly speaking, there are at least four possible outcomes from the hearing. First, the Court could uphold that the new districts announced on November 15th and allow filing to proceed. Second, the court could hold that it is now too late to reconsider the districts and that precedent requires that filing proceed in the November 15th districts. Third, the Court could direct the NCGA to redraw the districts, and Fourth, the Court could direct a special master to redraw the districts. In the event that the districts are redrawn it is likely that the filing period for US Congress will be further delayed.

UNCW, CFCC IDs Ruled Valid as 2020 Voter IDs

Students from University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College will be able to use their student IDs to vote in elections in North Carolina in 2020 when voter ID laws take effect. According to a story from the Associated Press, students and employees at all University of North Carolina system campuses, including UNCW and CFCC, will be able to use their school identification cards for the state’s voter ID mandate that begins in 2020 with the March primary. Previously the State Board of Elections rejected college IDs because a board leader decided they fell short of security standards set in a law implementing the photo ID mandate, which was added to the state constitution in a November 2018 referendum.

2020, a critical election year, will be the first time North Carolina's Voter ID law will be enforced. Several traditional forms of identification -- driver's licenses, passports, tribal ID cards, etc. -- will be accepted at the polls. Citizens without IDs may cast provisional ballots in 2020, but their votes will be counted only if they are able to provide identification later.

For all the rules on voter ID in North Carolina, visit the North Carolina Board of Elections site at https://www.ncsbe.gov/Voter-ID
