Hours ago, Uvalde 4th grader Miah Cerrillo testified to Congress that she smeared her friend’s blood on her body to try to protect herself from the man who shot and killed 19 of her classmates and 2 teachers with an assault rifle. (Watch here.)
The distraught parents of Lexi Rubio said this in testimony: "We seek a ban on assault rifles and high capacity magazines." But the Senate’s not even considering that.
The Atlantic explains: "Gun control is one of many issues in which majority opinion in the nation runs into the brick wall of a Senate rule -- the filibuster."
The math is simple. 48 Democratic senators voted to reform the filibuster this year. We need 50. Every Democratic candidate in key states supports this.
In their testimony to Congress, Lexi’s parents acknowledged the reality that “for some reason, to some people…guns are more important than children.”
They begged for Congress to at least make progress on compromises such as raising the age to purchase assault rifles from 18 to 21 years of age, red flag laws, stronger background checks, and repealing gun manufacturers' liability immunity.
But just yesterday, the Washington Post reported that while Senate negotiators try to find any gun reforms that can pass, "an assault weapons ban, restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines, and expansions of background checks to cover private gun sales -- are not on the table."
A new Politico poll shows that 88% of Americans support requiring background checks on all gun sales. Just 8% oppose. The same poll shows that 67% support banning assault-style weapons. Just 25% oppose.
But those tiny minorities right now have the filibuster at their disposal. Until that changes, the blood of children will continue to flow.
