John –

We are at a crossroad where public safety is concerned, and at the center of it is the question of what kind of leadership we need. Violence is on the rise and people are feeling less secure at home, out on the streets, and in their neighborhoods.

This weekend alone, several people were shot in separate incidents in Minneapolis. We need a leader in the County Attorney's office who will acknowledge the issues with gun safety and who will take the steps to do something about it. I should not be the only candidate in this race who is talking about this.

I encourage you all to ask the other candidates in this race why they've been silent on guns. The safety of our kids and our families depends on our leaders speaking out and taking action. Add your name here to let me know you're ready for action on guns in our county and want a Hennepin County Attorney who is ready to lead the way!

As Majority Leader, I’ve led the House through civil unrest, a pandemic, and a historic divide in beliefs among legislators on each side of the aisle. It was not an easy job. At the legislature, the ability to move anywhere on a gun bill was consistently blocked. And, I had to be able to take a lot of pressure and criticism in the public eye for my support of better gun laws. All of that was worth it, though, if it meant getting results for Minnesotans.

And despite Republican control of the Senate, we did make progress last month. We passed into law a $100 million in new funding for Minnesota's mental healthcare system. Given that the Senate blocked almost everything we wanted to do, I was proud we were able to find common ground to make even a little progress.

Meanwhile, my opponents in this race have been silent on guns completely; an issue that has taken far too many young lives in our community. This is not acceptable from anyone who wants to lead on public safety. Join our campaign today and help us bring public safety to every corner of Hennepin County.
