June is Pride month. It’s a reminder of what Queer folks have had to endure and the battles they’ve fought just to live. So today, I want to remind you that in Virginia, we don’t just rainbow-wash. We make effective policy changes.
That’s why, when the GOP introduced discriminatory and divisive legislation such as SB20, a bill that would have eliminated recognition of transgender students, and SB570, a bill that sought to “ban inherently divisive concepts” but could not even name what such a concept might be, I made a motion to pass by indefinitely, effectively killing the bills.
Why?
Because these bills targeted LGBTQIA+ students and students of color. They discriminated against transgender students in particular and put wasteful, wholly unnecessary barriers around what can be taught in Virginia’s schools with the intent of whitewashing American history.
Can you help support our grassroots efforts to make Virginia a more inclusive and a welcoming place for all by making a contribution to my campaign?
As an educator, I firmly believe education is meant to develop students’ abilities to think critically and to be challenged by ideas and experiences. Part of this includes learning about America’s unbiased history of the struggles and perseverance of LGBTQIA+ folks.
The GOP wants to erase the experiences of those who are low-income, have historically been marginalized, or are members of minority groups. I will always stand firmly against discrimination and will always fight to make Virginia’s schools a safe, welcoming, and nurturing place for all our students.
Please help support this work by making a contribution of any amount to my campaign.
Onwards, with love.
