The Fight for a Hunger Free America This June

LGBTQ & Hungry

June is Pride Month, a time when we honor the contributions and struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. Here at Hunger Free America, we believe that social justice is intrinsically tied to food justice and the fight against hunger. Unfortunately, food insecurity is all too prevalent in marginalized communities.

Throughout this month, we'll be highlighting the ways in which the LGBTQ+ community is affected by hunger and food insecurity, as well as steps we all can take to advocate for a more inclusive and just society. You can visit our webpage for more information, and make sure to follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Wishing everyone a very happy Pride!

School Nutrition Waivers Set to Expire

On June 30th, federal school nutrition waivers, which have been in place since the early days of the pandemic, are set to expire. These waivers allowed all students to access free school meals, regardless of income level, for the first time in modern history.

Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg spoke to Education Week about the need to extend these waivers and create a permanent universal school meals program.
Can you take a few minutes to contact your federal representatives and ask them to reauthorize the waivers for the next school year? You can find your elected representatives HERE.

More Ways to Order Healthy, Affordable Food Online

Last month Hunger Free America joined with Congressman Ritchie Torres and other elected officials to promote new ways for SNAP food recipients to order healthy, affordable foods online for home delivery.

We also announced a historic partnership with Tangelo, which will provide New Yorkers with healthy grocery boxes that include snacks, meal kits, fresh produce, and simple recipes, all of which can be purchased with SNAP benefits.

Customers will receive the 30% Tangelo Nutrition Incentive, which empowers low-income families to make healthy food choices. For every $100 spent on healthy food, families will receive an additional $30 in free healthy food.  Hunger Free America will receive a small donation for every purchase made, which will help HFA continue its mission of ending hunger in America.
White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health
For the first time in over 50 years, the White House will host a conference on hunger, nutrition, and health, with the goal of ending hunger and increasing healthy eating and physical activity by 2030.

The conference, which is set to take place in September of this year, is currently soliciting input from people with lived experience with hunger and food insecurity.

You can submit a personal story to Hunger Free America HERE. We will be collecting these submissions and passing them along to the White House.

The AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate program is a short-term, summer only compliment to the full-year VISTA program.

Summer Associates expand and support the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and nutrition education programming, improve awareness of nutritious food options at farmers’ markets, and raise awareness of and eliminate barriers to SNAP and other food/nutrition-access services. Last summer we had 110 Summer Associates working with anti-hunger organizations in 23 states.
