Housing And Children's Health
The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) is the US federal government's primary policy for financing new affordable rental housing. Nearly 29 percent, or approximately 557,000, of the LIHTC units house children.

In their article in the June 2022 issue of Health Affairs, Sarah Gensheimer and colleagues used a nationally representative data set to examine whether health care access and health status among children living in LIHTC properties are better than those of other low income children.

Their findings with respect to health care access and health status were mixed. Children living in LIHTC properties had a higher predicted probability of having a well-child visit in the past twelve months and a dental visit in the past six months.

However, these children also had a higher predicted probability of chronic school absenteeism and current asthma – results that surprised Gensheimer and colleagues.

For more on this topic, revisit our past Health Policy Briefs, including one about using the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit to fill the rental housing gap.
Elsewhere At Health Affairs
Today in Health Affairs Forefront, Alexa Fleet and coauthors discuss how meeting the behavioral health care needs of older Americans depends on integrated health services success, especially via technology, and flexible payment model strategies.
