π Be proud today and every day, John!
Itβs officially Pride Month β a time of celebration, festivity, and reflection for the LGBTQ+ community. π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ
This month, Iβm reflecting on the advocates of the LGBTQ+ movement who are paving the way for Americans to live freely and authentically. Trailblazers from Pennsylvania like U.S. assistant health secretary Dr. Rachael Levine, the highest-ranking openly trans official in the federal government, and Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, the first openly gay Black representative in the PA House, broke barriers in LGBTQ+ representation in government.
As we celebrate how far we've come, let's also remember that we have a long way to go. In Pennsylvania, it is still legal to discriminate based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. In 2022, thatβs unacceptable.
LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians deserve equal rights and equal opportunities. Thatβs why we must pass The Equality Act β legislation that secures federal nondiscrimination protections in housing, employment, education, and much more.
Across the country, Republican-led state legislatures are ramping up their attacks by passing laws targeting queer children and trans youth.
I am committed to standing alongside the LGBTQ+ community in their fight for justice and freedom. Together, we will work to build a more inclusive, fairer future for all. π³οΈββ§οΈπ³οΈβπ
I hope you have a happy Pride month,
β Ashley
