John,
My name is Harpreet Singh Chima — a son of immigrants, a union member, an organizer — and I want to tell you a bit about why I decided to run for this seat and what this movement is about. This is a long email but I'll hope you read it to learn more about why we need new, progressive leadership for CA-09.
I’ve worked on progressive campaigns for City Council and District Attorney.
I’ve organized coalitions to support Green New Deal legislation and affordable student housing.
As a member-at-large at my UPTE-CWA 9119 union local, I’ve worked with my fellow union members to raise funds for our undocumented neighbors when our government failed to deliver them the first round of COVID-19 stimulus payments. And, I have helped lead the effort for a non-police first responders program, CALL Stockton.
I’m running for Congress because I believe our government should serve the people who do the actual work of keeping this country going.
After years of progressive activism, I look at our communities and I can still see the lack of progress we’ve made. The people of the Central Valley are often forgotten — though these are the same people who work the jobs that are the backbones of our economy.
But I know something else, too: the working people across our communities in CA-09 are leading a movement to change all of that. And I’m ready to make sure that it succeeds.
We have a chance to elect leadership that fights for working people without apology and without reserve. I’m ready to be that fighter for our district.
Together, we can build a better future for all of us.
In solidarity,
Harpreet Chima
Democratic Candidate for California’s 9th Congressional District
