I wanted to reach out to you personally and share what’s going on with the Protecting Our Kids Act. We will be voting on this on the House floor this week. I know many of you may not have seen these details so I wanted to share.

I serve on the House Judiciary Committee, and last Thursday in a grueling 9+ hour meeting, the committee debated and marked up the Protecting Our Kids Act. In the wake of so much tragic, preventable gun violence, it is essential that we continue working towards common sense solutions for gun violence prevention — this can not and will not be another moment of legislative inaction.

Often when we hear about legislation it feels so dense and out of our personal control, but I want to give you a debrief of the Protecting Our Kids Act that is soon coming up for a vote and ask you to sign your name in support of this essential gun violence prevention legislation.

The Protecting Our Kids Act is a combination package of eight bills, each serves a specific purpose in protecting innocent Americans. The Protecting Our Kids Act includes the following legislation:

  • Raise the Age Act increases the purchasing age for semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21
  • Prevent Gun Trafficking Act would establish gun trafficking as a criminal offense
  • Untraceable Firearms Act would require all firearms, including those 3D printed, to have a traceable serial number
  • Ethan’s Law, Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act, and the Kimberly Vaughan Firearm Safety Storage Act aim to introduce safe storage requirements and tax incentives for firearms and ammunition stored at home
  • Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act would regulate bump stocks at the same level as machine guns
  • Keep Americans Safe Act would outlaw importing, selling, making, and transferring of large-capacity magazines

Our debate and mark up meeting last week was a battle. My Republican colleagues in Congress think the solution to the gun violence epidemic is thoughts and prayers. While we Democrats know we need real legislative reform on the state and federal level.

I am taking this fight head on and I need your support. Sign on now and send a message to the GOP that we are not stopping until we move on the Protecting Our Kids Act.

More soon,

Mary Gay
