The Department of Justice?s Bureau of Justice Statistics released Immigration, Citizenship, and the Federal Justice System, 2000?2020 ? Supplemental Tables. The tables add 2019 and 2020 data to some of the tables from the original report that BJS published in August 2019. The supplemental tables provide data on immigration suspects in matters concluded by federal prosecutors by type of offense and judicial district in 2019 and 2020.
BJS produced Incidence of Victimization at School and Away From School, an indicator that is now included in the 2022 Condition of Education. The Condition of Education is a report produced by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Institute of Education Sciences, in the Department of Education.
The Condition of Education contains key indicators on the condition of education in the United States from prekindergarten through postsecondary, as well as labor force outcomes and international comparisons, and is published through the Condition of Education Indicator System website. Eight indicators use data collected by BJS through the National Crime Victimization Survey and School Crime Supplement, including Incidence of Victimization at School and Away From School, which was updated this year with data through 2020. Following this release, the BJS and NCES regular joint publication titled Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2021 will be published in July 2022.
This report provides data on persons in the custody of state and federal correctional authorities who were known to be living with HIV in 2020. It presents national- and jurisdiction-level estimates of the number and rate of prisoners living with HIV while in the custody of state and federal correctional authorities. It also provides the number and demographic characteristics of state and federal prisoners who died of AIDS-related illnesses. Data on HIV testing practices by jurisdiction are also included.

This third-party report was prepared by the Urban Institute for BJS to enhance understanding of the topic and to encourage discussion. It examines the role that the type of defense counsel plays in federal justice system outcomes.
BJS funded a study of the variation of counsel type across numerous measures related to case processing, legal case characteristics, and extra-legal factors, as well as the relationship between type of counsel and two critical sentencing decisions: incarceration and sentence length. The types of counsel examined include public defenders, assigned counsel, and private attorneys.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) seeks applications for funding of the Census of State Courts (CSC). The goal of the program is to further DOJ?s mission by increasing transparency, collaboration, and participation of state criminal courts. The CSC will provide a complete census of all state and local trial and appellate courts and information on their staffing and types of cases. Through a cooperative agreement, the recipient of funds will be responsible for working closely with BJS on the CSC to (1) develop and test a data collection instrument; (2) update the existing frame of courts, including identifying municipal courts; (3) field the CSC; and (4) conduct data cleaning, analysis, and delivery of raw and final datasets.

BJS seeks applications for funding for the second iteration of the Census of Public Defender Offices (CPDO). This 36-month program will collect information on indigent defense, including the operations, workload, staff size, policies, and procedures of the approximately 1,000 public defender offices across the nation. It includes (1) questionnaire development, (2) frame development, (3) fielding the CPDO, and (4) data cleaning, analysis, and delivery of raw and final datasets and a comprehensive final performance report.

BJS seeks applications for funding for the fiscal year (FY) 2022 Methodological Research on Measuring Community- and Officer-Initiated Law Enforcement Activity. This program will assess the feasibility of aggregating information on such law enforcement (LE) activity, as captured in disparate computer-aided dispatch systems. Work funded under this cooperative agreement is expected to take 18 months, with the objectives of (1) defining a methodology for capturing analyzable data on community- and officer-initiated LE activity from nonstandard information in locally administered records systems, (2) developing a normalized, analytic database of records on such LE activity from 15 to 25 agencies as a ?proof of concept,? and (3) reporting on the feasibility of and methodology required to scale up the proof-of-concept database to a nationally representative collection.

BJS conducts the National Survey of Youth in Custody (NSYC) to provide national- and facility-level estimates of youth reporting sexual victimization in juvenile facilities as required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA). NSYC results have shown a decrease over time in the percentage of youth reporting sexual victimization in the survey. This webinar provides background on BJS?s role in PREA and presents findings from the third NSYC on the overall prevalence of sexual victimization in youth facilities and victim, perpetrator, and incident characteristics.
This webinar discusses findings from the BJS recidivism reports released in 2021 and the methodology used to conduct the studies. The first study on persons released from prison in 2012 included the largest number of states for a BJS recidivism study to date. The second study on persons released from prison in 2008 included the longest follow-up period for a BJS recidivism study. The webinar also examines trends in recidivism over time.
