This week, the EU and its Member
States will take part as Parties to the UN Framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC). Under the presidency of Chile, which had
originally planned to host the conference, delegates continue to
negotiate the rules for international cooperation in climate change
mitigation and discuss issues such as adaptation and support to
developing countries. Ahead of the UN COP25 Climate Change Conference
in Madrid, the Parliament approved a resolution declaring a climate
and environmental emergency in Europe and globally. The European
Commission has already proposed the goal of net-zero emissions by
2050, but the European Council has still not endorsed it as Poland,
Hungary and the Czech Republic are opposed. Meanwhile, EU Justice and
Home Affairs Ministers will be discussing the future of EU migration
and asylum policy this week, while the telecommunications council will
look into the role of 5G technology for Europe's economy. Later on
this week, the ECOFIN council is discussing how to best finance
climate action.
Last but not least, the European Movement
International is organising the 4th edition of Women of Europe Awards
this Wednesday, which honour women striving to advance the European
project. This year number of inspiring women are nominated for their
achievements in the field of business, action, power and youth
activism.
