A slightly blurred collage of community photos. A march with yellow signs, two people hugging, a meeting, and a person talking on a megaphone are visible. There is a transparent blue overlay and a semi-transparent lighter blue box with the words "Headwaters Foundation for Justice e-newsletter" in black.<[link removed]>

Gratitude for our donors
As we near the end of our fiscal year, we want thank you for your engagement and support of Headwaters’ work to advance justice throughout Minnesota.
Being in a virtual donor community these past few years has, at times, felt lonely. Headwaters is deeply relational, so it’s been challenging to always feel the connections we know are there.
Even so, we’ve seen donors be bold and generous and engage in new ways that stretch the imagination. Thank you for jumping into Zoom spaces, responding to our calls, going for walks, and asking thoughtful questions about our programming and grantmaking. We are inspired by you!
Last week we tried something new: an in-person gathering! For the first time in over 2 years we gathered to hear stories from our grantee partners on the front lines and to celebrate donors.
<[link removed]>
In practicing community care, we limited the number of guests to keep the risks posed by COVID-19 low. Greeting folks we haven’t seen in person for over 2 years was recharging, and we hope you’re able to join us for future events.
Thank you again for your support as we close out our fiscal year. If you can renew your gift from last year,
please do so now<[link removed]>. The money we raise builds power, and our collective force continues to be strong.

Roula and Bilal Alkatout are philanthropic adapters
For June’s installment of our Donor Story project we are thrilled to introduce you to two Headwaters community members: Roula and Bilal Alkatout.
The Alkatout siblings have been deeply woven into the Headwaters community for years, bringing their insight and passion to donor organizing and shifting the philanthropic field. Roula participated in a Giving Project cohort and currently volunteers with Headwaters’ Development Committee. Bilal served on the Headwaters board and recently joined our staff as the Associate Director of Program and Grantmaking.
In their story, Bilal and Roula share how their family’s immigrant experience as Palestinian asylum seekers has shaped their adaptive and transformational approaches as philanthropic organizers.
We hope you’ll spend some time getting to know Bilal and Roula today.

Fund of the Sacred Circle featured in Sahan Journal
Headwaters' Wakíŋyaŋ LaPointe recently lead Native community grantmakers through a grantmaking process for our longest standing fund, Fund of the Sacred Circle. In May,
Sahan Journal<[link removed]> pubslihed a feature detailing the history and cultural context of the Fund and the 'cangleska wakan' (sacred circle) that it is named for.
"Historically, the act of giving has been at the heart of economic prosperity and self-determination for many Indigenous communities that gave way to lasting intergenerational wealth,” LaPointe shares. “This was especially true of my people, the Lakota people, who continue to carry on ceremonies of giving back to all life."
We hope you'll spend some time with the piece today

Unidos We Vote<[link removed]>
Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 5:30 p.m.
This year’s elections are critical and too much is at stake. We are up against candidates that refuse to see our humanity, the rich that continue to exploit our frontline workers, we are up against an education system that invalidates our students, and we are up against developers that continue to push our communities out of their homes. But, this does not need to be our realities.
This year we have an opportunity to win Ethnic Studies, Driver’s License, Frontline worker pay, Immigration reform, and so much more, but that will only happen if we are clear and grounded in our power. Join us on June 15th as we launch our Unidos We Vote program.
