Reconciling Two Key Frameworks: Feminist Foreign Policy and Women, Peace, and Security


In the latest WIIS Policy Brief, authors WIIS Senior Fellow, Joan Johnson-Freese, and Susan Markhamexamine the two main frameworks regarding gender equality and women’s participation in international policy and conflict resolution: the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) framework and the feminist foreign policy framework (FFP), arguing that the goals of both frameworks are the same and that the tension largely rests on differences in approach. They ultimately suggest that while these differences in approach are not insignificant, both frameworks would benefit from the greater acknowledgment of and closer coordination with each other so that more progress can be made within the gender equality movement.

Feminist Foreign Policy: A Bridge Between the Global and Local


WIIS FellowAna Velasco Ugalde,and 2021 WIIS Next Generation ScholarDaniela Philipson García,recently published an op-ed in the Yale Journal of International Affairs. This op-ed examines how Mexico's attempt to embrace a feminist foreign policy has shed light on the power asymmetries between developed and developing countries in engaging with feminist foreign policy. They argue that, in an increasingly globalized world, feminism and feminist foreign policies should assert that global affairs are determined by local dynamics and local policies.

The Role of Ukrainian Women in the Resistance to Russian Aggression


On May 12, WIIS Portugal organized an event with Ms. Ivanna Klympush, Ukrainian Member of Parliament and former Vice-Prime-Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine. In this session, moderated by WIIS Portugal President Ana Gomes, Ms. Klympush drew attention to Ukrainian women's experiences, resilience, and courage in resisting the Russian invasion. She also highlighted the importance of EU and NATO cooperation in advancing the status of women, mainly through reporting and accountability for war crimes.

WIIS Italy Hosts a Meeting on “Gender & Security” with Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister, Emine Dzhaparova


On May 21, 2022, WIIS Italy, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Italy, held a closed-door meeting with Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister, Emine Dzhaparova. The Deputy Foreign Minister shared her reflections on the conflict and its expected evolution, the role of women, and the likelihood of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

A Gendered Approach to Counterterrorism: Global Counterterrorism Forum Side-Event in Dakar


On May 10th and 11th, WIIS Brussels presented its project "Promoting the Role of Women in Security and Counterterrorism" at the Global Counterterrorism Forum side-event "A Gendered Approach to Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism & Counterterrorism" in Dakar. They presented the initial findings of their project, focusing on the strategic, operational, and tactical added value of having more women in counterterrorism.

Just Launched: Navigating the Terrain of Gender Justice: A Handbook for Gender Audits at Higher Education Institutes in India (2022)


Drawn from its vast experience of facilitating gender audits in HEIs across the country, WISCOMP (Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace) New Delhi launched its handbook 'Navigating the Terrain of Gender Justice: A Handbook for Gender Audits at Higher Education Institutes in India (2022)'. To mark the launch of this handbook, WISCOMP brought together experts for a dialogue on "Embedding Gender Justice in Academy." The panelists shared insights on a range of equality concerns and deliberated upon the role of Higher Education Institutes in India’s quest for gender equality.

Policy Brief Launch Event: Mapping the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Latin America


On May 24th, WIIS Fellow, Ana Velasco Ugalde, spoke at an event held by the BRICS Policy Center, marking the launch of her recent policy brief "Mapping the 'Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Latin America: A Comparison of National Action Plans [[link removed]]." This policy brief analyzes the diffusion of the WPS Agenda in Latin America by synthesizing the main advances, highlighting the limits in the ways different countries engage with the WPS Agenda, and providing recommendations to promote WPS implementation in the region.

Call for Papers: Digital Workshop on Localizing the Women Peace & Security Agenda Across Multiple Governance Challenges


The Global Transformations and Governance Challenges Programme at Leiden University will be hosting a digital workshop on January 26-27, 2023. This workshop will bring together scholars working on the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. Participants will be required to present a conference paper related to the topic of ‘Localizing the WPS Agenda’.
